Easter Fun

We had Doug's parents over the day before Easter. They brought goodies of course!

I've been getting these turkey tenderloins recently and they are delicious! Just pop in the oven for an hour, and so moist and tasty. We also had baked potatoes, crescent rolls, asparagus and I made a lemon bundt from the Magnolia Table cookbook. It was pretty, but I would've preferred a stronger lemon flavor.

The next day we celebrated our risen Lord!

We love our church, but I've found on the big ones, Easter and Christmas, I prefer a more traditional church service. I guess that's just the pipe-organ-builder's daughter in me. I love a good traditional hymn. So we went to my parents' church.

My mom's arms got a workout holding Jeanie most of the service. That girl just loves to be held. In retrospect, squeaky shoes were not the best choice when going to a church with kids walking up to the children's ministry minute, lol.

The papier mache tomb of my youth has been replaced by a picture on a screen! Ahh the times they are a 'changing.

Followed by a nice Easter dinner at my parents' new house. Dad and Jeanie enjoying some fresh air and sunshine and a lake view. We had a potroast and other tasty things, and I made a chocolate cream pie. Which was actually too rich, who'd have ever thought a chocolate lover would ever say that!?

My parents and Doug took the kids over to a local park and I enjoyed a nap on their couch. Everyone came back and I chatted with my mom while she mended some of Jeanie's sleepsacks, then lunch turned into dinner time and we grilled some brats. Mmm. It was a perfect day.

Valentine's day

We had a nice family day before I worked the weekend. And my dad came over on the 13th too to watch the kids while we went out for dinner, so that was awesome!

Wagon ride earlier in the week

Doug gave me a valentine every day this week.

I used to sleep with my butt up in the air too :)

10 months old!!!

My Valentine.

Happy Halloween

Last night we took out August for his first time trick-or-treating!
He didn't say it, but he was happy to grab the candy out of people's hands, or bowl, and stuff it into his pumpkin. And he always said 'thank you' :)
I don't think he really even knows what he was grabbing. His pumpkin has sat all day on the chair here and he hasn't once reached for it or tried to open any of the candy. Meanwhile... mom and dad have been eating some!
The look of determination as he walked to the house
He was the cutest little Ewok in town.
Doug wanted to spring for the Disney brand costume and I'm actually glad we did, it looked so good, seriously the fur was like realistically rippling in the breeze as he walked. Next year though we'll probably just get something from the Salvation Army!
The trick-or-treating in our neighborhood is from 6-8 so the first hour we went out with him, and the second hour we planned to pass out candy, but then we only got 2 visitors! So not only do we have his candy, but also most of the bowl that we bought to hand out! Haha. But it was nice to walk through our neighborhood and even introduce ourselves to some of our neighbors, we have such kind people in our area.

Labor Day weekend

We were supposed to be up North at my cousin's wedding for the weekend. They were getting married in Lake Leelanau and we were looking forward to getting away. My parents were going too and offered to watch August an afternoon so Doug & I could go out baby-free to just have a date day in the beachtown city, and I was reaaaaallly looking forward to it.
Instead August had spiked a fever again, and after calls to the family we were going to stay with, it sounded like no one wanted us to come and potentially spread the germs. So we stayed home. In the afternoon August seemed a little worse, and he was even sitting in his high chair shaking with chills and his lips turned blue. Of course it was the weekend so his doctor was closed, so we went to the hospital where they have an after hours pediatric clinic.
As soon as the nurse found out I said he was shaking and had blue lips she told us she thought he had a seizure and we had to go next door to the ER. That was when I started crying. So we walked down there. And I cried more tears as they strapped a little nametag bracelet to his ankle. That little bracelet turned him from a boy just going in for a quick check-up, to a little sick boy who might have just had a seizure and I couldn't handle it.
Right away we saw a Nurse Practitioner who after we explained again what happened, reassured us that she didn't think he had a seizure. Just that in an effort to cool his body down he was shaking and blood shunted away from the lips which explained them briefly turning blue. So that was a huge relief. But we still needed to figure out why the high fever. And he'd had one the weekend before, and the month before that had us in the Urgent Care while we were visiting my brother.
So the testing began. Poor August was poked and prodded. They did a rectal temp (most accurate) 104.7, they did a straight cath (a tube into the bladder to get a clean urine specimen), and they drew blood and started an IV to give him fluids. It just seemed so serious. Urine cultures, lab work, blood cultures. He did wiggle and scream, but overall did pretty well I thought. And the nurse and tech were great and everything (except the rectal probe not working until the third time) only took one try.
So then we waited for results and August napped on dad.
My boy looks so big!
The blood work came back normal, but the urine was +1 bacteria with some white blood cells, which usually wouldn't be treated, but since his fever was so high he did get a dose of IV antibiotics. And after that they let us go.
During the night Doug slept on the couch and got up every 4 hours to check August's temperature, and he had 2 more fevers during the night. But after that he's been fever-free. The cultures both came back negative which means he did not have a true urinary tract infection, so that's good, but it also doesn't really solve the mystery of these high fevers. He'd been so drooly lately I thought he was getting his 2 year molars, but the NP said while you can get a fever with teething it's rarely over 100. So that kinda busts that theory.
Anyway, I'm so thankful that August is ok and it wasn't anything serious. My heart breaks thinking about children who are really truly sick in hospitals. It was really scary. Thank you Lord for protecting my boy!

4th of July

This year one of my favorite holidays was spent at work, wahh wahhhh. Well at least I get time and a half.
The place where we had our wedding hosted a fireworks festival on the 3rd so we went over there with my sister and brother-in-law.
They had advertised food trucks, which ended up being a Big Boy truck and coney island. Lame! I was imagining these eclectic food options. We we had food and sat on a lawn blanket, listened to some live music, August enjoyed this toy area and tried to jump in one of those bounce houses.
Then Doug took him home to bed so I could stay and watch the fireworks with Elizabeth and Johnny, it was nice.
The next day I worked and Doug took August to his friend's for a pool party, BBQ hangout. After work I met them for a few minutes then took August home to bed so Doug could stay and watch his friend's fireworks show. It was a good trade off. His friend has put thousands into this Jeep, it is a monster! Maybe August will grow up to be a Jeep lover like daddy.
We are thankful to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Mother's Day Weekend

This last weekend was very nice. We had a 3 day family weekend off work. One night my parents offered to come babysit in the evening so we started out with a date night and saw I Can Only Imagine. It was so good! Truly moving. I recommend it.
We did a little shopping with our Menard's rebates and I picked up plants for my raised beds. I'm giving gardening one last try this year!
One big tomato plant, two little tomato plants, zucchini, green beans, sugar snap peas, yellow peppers, and strawberries. They look so pretty in the garden bed.
Actual mother's day was a little rushed as our friend's baby was baptized that day and Doug was the godfather. Ended up not being so fun for me as I spent the whole baptism chasing August in the hallway and then Doug got to go to brunch while I had to take August home to nap, waaaaah. But it was ok. I took a little nap and then when he got home I went to use a gift card that I had received for Christmas for a "make up lesson". So it was nice to have some "me" time. I say make-up lesson because it was supposed to be a 30 minute lesson of showing me how to do makeup, like she does an eye, I do an eye. Anyway, it was actually a little disappointing because people kept interrupting to ask her where something was in the store, and she was polite about it like "sorry for that", but it still took time out of my 30 minutes. And she spent some other time looking for "the right color match" in some other area of the store. And then when I asked about eyeliner it was like 'oh out of time'. And she ended up doing all the makeup herself so it wasn't really a lesson at all. The same thing happened that always does when I get my makeup done, it always looks too different so I just go back to normal. And she gave me like super dark eyebrows so all I could see was eyebrows when I looked at myself. Anyway. Would be kinda fun to play more with makeup, but in the words of that famous news lady, ain't nobody got time for that. My bathroom uninterrupted time is extremely limited.
It was kinda late after that makeup experience so we just went to this quick Mediterranean place where I always get hummus/bread, and delicious salad. I love their salads so much, I just never have all those same veggies on hand to chop up!
August ate tons of veggies and loved it.
Here was us at church earlier
My first art from my son! I love it so much. So sweet of his Sunday school teachers to make that for me.
Beautiful tulips, my boys also got me wind chimes and a massage gift card
August checking out the new fern plant
It was a very nice weekend, and I am so blessed to be August's mother.
